ABOUT
[singlepic id=479 w=320 h=240 float=left]My name is Michael Poeschl, pesh for short and I started photography back when I was introduced to it at T.L. Hanna High School in Anderson, SC. I liked photography enough but did not turn it into a career until about 5 years ago. I began photographing weddings (www.edenphotography.net) and have brought photography to most every other portion of my life.
I have a family – Heather my wife, Jordan (12) and Grace (1), and I spend a good bit of time shooting them so it was natural to photograph kids and families.
I train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – About 2 years ago, I started with Gracie Barra. I am still a blue belt on the mats but have to be at least a purple belt in photographing this great sport and lifestyle. I actively contribute to the Gracie Mag where I have had 1/3 of the last years’ covers. Seeing my photographs on the cover of ANYTHING let along this publication brings me joy and honor. When I first covered a tournament with the guys from GracieMag, I was just excited to be close to the action and have access to the fighters. I was so stoked to see my first photo inside, and never did I think I would end up with a cover !
What’s up with this name of yours?
Well, with a name like “POESCHL” you can imagine how often it is mis-spelled or mis-pronounced – it is pronounced like special but without the ‘S’. Back in middle school I started hearing people call me pesh for short and it was not until my good friend in the Marines used it exclusively that I truly made it mine. It is NOT some alter ego, I don’t wear a cape, it’s just my nickname. Hopefully it is as easy to remember as the images I capture
Why are you a photographer?
I feel that this stems from my heritage. My family is a mix of German and Irish and when my Grandma would start getting into the who’s who in the family, she would whip out a photo album. Maybe it was her stories, maybe it was that I am a lazy leaner and benefitted form the pictures! I am not sure but whatever it was, it stuck. I took a photography class in High School and was hooked.
I want to be able to sit down one day with my children, their children and hopefully, THEIR children and show them the people in our family like my Grandma did.
My hope is to help others do that same thing, pass on the legacy of their stories to another generation.
